I left the door half open so she would know she was free. In hindsight, it was arrogant believing our relationship would be stronger than any worldly temptation. Back then, the notion she could be seduced by someone else’s golden cage would have seemed ludicrous to me. But she was. The lures of this world beckoned her. Eventually, she was not able to resist its sirens. One day — completely unexpected — she flew away towards a better life, never looking back.
