He was sitting beside her, as usual playing his game. Tired of trying to get his attention, her mind started wandering off. Would they make it? She thought, and felt a chill run down her spine. What if their time together was limited? As if in a high stakes negotiation, she pleaded with the universe to let those days be spread out over their lifetime, then. I am hungry, he said, jolting her out of her daydream. It is your turn to cook today, she replied. He grunted, threw his console on the living room table, and walked to the kitchen. She curled up on and over the warm spot he left behind on the couch and resumed her negotiation with the universe.
